Italian scooter maker Piaggio announced on Monday the establishment of the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SMBC) together with Honda Motor Co., KTM AG and Yamaha Motor Co. to encourage the use of swappable batteries for both electric motorbikes and light electric cars.

SBMC aims to support more sustainable management of the batteries of light electric vehicles and broaden their use. The focus will be on issues like battery life, costs, infrastructure, recharging times and defining international standards. The companies involved welcome others joining them in order to extend established standards to as many others as possible.

Piaggio Chief of Strategy and Product Michele Colaninno and Honda's Motorcycle Operations Chief Officer Yoshishige Nomura spoke of the consortium ensuring motorbikes continue to play a key role in vehicle electrification and the creation of a more sustainable society.
