Marriott partners with Rakuten over Japanese travel industry

Marriott hotel group and Japanese electronic commerce company announced on Thursday an industry-first strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing the domestic and international travel experience for Japanese customers.

The agreement is designed to leverage Rakuten's expertise in the digital sphere and capitalize on the growth of Japan's digital economy on one hand and Marriot's expansion of the Bonvoy program on the other hand.

"This collaboration with Rakuten underscores our optimism for travel recovery. With a significant number of Japan's population a Rakuten member, we anticipate this collaboration will allow us to strategically capture a greater share of a strong Japanese travel market," said Rajeev Menon, Marriott executive.
