'Civil unrest' behind Djokovic visa cancelation - minister

Saturday, 15. January 2022 05:31

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke canceled Novak Djokovic's visa, arguing that his presence in Australia could spur "civil unrest" and incite others to skip COVID-19 vaccination, documents filed in the court revealed on Saturday.

"I consider that Mr. Djokovic's ongoing presence in Australia may lead to an increase in anti-vaccination sentiment generated in the Australian community, potentially leading to an increase in civil unrest of the kind previously experienced in Australia with rallies and protests which may themselves be a source of community transmission," stated Alex Hawke.

Meanwhile, Djokovic will face a federal court hearing next Sunday morning, Australian time, on whether the minister acted unreasonably canceling his visa.
