Intel wins appeal against EU's antitrust claims

The European General Court (EGC) ruled on Wednesday in favor of Intel Corporation's appeal against the European Commission's decision to fine the company €1.06 billion over the alleged breach of antitrust rules.

Back in 2009, the commission penalized Intel for its alleged efforts to hamper Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.'s (AMD) business by giving rebates to the firms that would agree to buy semiconductors from it. The court initially rejected the call but then supported it in 2014. In 2017, the European Union Court of Justice (CJEU) told the EGC to re-evaluate the case.

"The commission's analysis is incomplete and does not make it possible to establish to the requisite legal standard that the rebates at issue were capable of having, or likely to have, anticompetitive effects," the court concluded this time.
