US markets open lower on data, earnings

United States stocks started the last trading session of the week below the flatline with the focus on today's batch of economic data and corporate earnings. The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported that personal consumption expenditures grew 1% in June. ExxonMobil, Chevron, Caterpillar, P&G, and Colgate all reported increases in revenue.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.20% at the opening bell. Despite an improvement in earnings, Caterpillar surrendered 2.18%. The Nasdaq 100 lost 1.08%, while the S&P 500 decreased 0.54%. Inc. was the worst performer, tumbling 7.10%.

The euro was flat against the dollar at 9:29 am ET, changing hands for $1.18790.
