Taiwan midterm elections underway amid China crisis

Saturday, 26. November 2022 06:57

Taiwanese voters are casting their ballots on Saturday in midterm elections in 13 counties. The island will vote on local leaders, including mayors, as well as on whether to lower the voting age from 20 to 18.

The elections are taking place amidst tensions with China, which has not abandoned the threats of invasion. The two main Taiwanese parties competing for votes in the midterms have different approaches to China, with the Kuomintang advocating closer relations with Beijing. Meanwhile, the Democratic People's Party, led by Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, holds a firm line against China and intends to defend the island's sovereignty.
