Rolls-Royce, EasyJet test green hydrogen jet engine

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited and easyJet plc successfully tested an airplane engine that runs on green hydrogen, the former company announced on Monday.

Green hydrogen, which is created by wind and tidal power, represents, as Rolls-Royce said, "a major step towards proving that hydrogen could be a zero carbon aviation fuel of the future and is a key proof point in the decarbonization strategies of both Rolls-Royce and easyJet." The test took place at the British Royal Air Force's (RAF) base MoD Boscombe Down on a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A regional aircraft engine.

The companies involved in the project now plan additional trials and an eventual full-scale ground test of the fuel on the Rolls-Royce Pearl 15 jet engine.
