American biotechnology company Moderna announced on Wednesday that the European Commission approved a deal to purchase 80 million doses of its coronavirus vaccine, with the option to buy up to 80 million more.

Delivery of the mRNA vaccine could begin as early as the first quarter of 2021 if it secures approval from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) human medicines committee (CHMP), Moderna said.

"We have scaled up our manufacturing capacity outside of the United States with our strategic partners, Lonza and Rovi, to be able to deliver approximately 500 million doses per year and possibly up to 1 billion doses per year beginning in 2021, if approved," Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel said in a press release.
