United States President Joe Biden is set to announce his administration intends to secure an additional 100 million doses of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine by the end of 2021, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

The purchase would allow the expansion of the inoculation program to include children, as well as to potentially provide booster shots if they are needed to combat the new coronavirus strains, the news organization said.

The announcement is expected to be made following the president's meeting with J&J and Merck & Co. Inc. executives.
