Russia asks FB, Twitter to provide data localization

The Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) demanded on Thursday Facebook Inc., Twitter Inc., and Alphabet Inc.'s Google provided it with information on the localization of Russian users' databases.

The agency said it would decide if it should press legal charges against those companies if they failed to meet its requests again. It also stressed authorities fined Facebook and Twitter over the matter in 2020 and noted the tech giants were yet to pay those fees.

Earlier this month, Russia's Moscow Tagansky District Magistrates' Court ordered Twitter to pay 8 million rubles, or almost $117,000, for not deleting content deemed illegal in that country.
