Germany needs a national lockdown in order to break the latest wave of the coronavirus in the country, German Health Minister Jens Spahn said during a live press conference on Friday.

Spahn stated that social contacts would have to be regulated by nighttime curfews if necessary. "We can't wait until the clinics are overloaded. Therefore, the third wave must be broken as soon as possible," he said.

According to the minister, the infection situation in Germany is still tense. The vaccination rollout is on track, but it's still not fast enough. Spahn emphasized that the interest in all three available vaccines in Germany is high and stressed that they would provide the AstraZeneca vaccine to the Bundestag.
