The European Union intends to soon sign COVID-19 vaccine procurement contracts for 2022 and 2023, and secure 1.8 billion shots for the period, Die Welt reported on Friday.

According to the outlet, the bloc plans to order mRNA coronavirus vaccines, meaning that it would have to opt for the jab made by Pfizer/BioNTech, or for the vaccine developed by Moderna Inc.

The bloc also looks to invest €121.5 million into "digital green certificates" aimed at facilitating "free movement" across Europe during the remainder of the "COVID-19 pandemic," and at curbing the spread of the coronavirus variants.
