S. African strain better at bypassing Pfizer jab - Israeli scientists

The protection that the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer/BioNTech provides can be "broken through" to some extent by the virus's South African variant, a study done by Tel Aviv University and the Clalit healthcare organization revealed on Saturday.

The study was done on swabs taken from 150 people who have contracted the disease after having been inoculated, with the data showing eight times higher prevalence of South African strain compared to the unvaccinated infected population.

"Based on patterns in the general population, we would have expected just one case of the South African variant, but we saw eight," chief of the research team, Adi Stern, said to The Times of Israel while admitting that the sample is not big enough to draw definitive conclusions, and adding that the data hasn't been peer-reviewed.
