The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday that news about Merck's antiviral pill against COVID-19 is "certainly good news," but noted it is still awaiting clinical data from the drug trials.

"We’re looking forward to receiving the data from them," WHO's COVID-19 Technical Lead Maria van Kerkhove stated. "I think everybody wants earlier treatment so that we prevent people from actually, you know, getting to that severe state and actually dying from the disease," she added.

Last week, Merck said its drug developed in cooperation with Ridgeback Biotherapeutics "reduced the risk of hospitalization or death by approximately 50%" in a phase three trial.
