Merck & Co. Inc. said on Wednesday it has signed a deal with Singapore for the supply of its COVID-19 antiviral drug Molnupiravir, which is said to be able to reduce hospitalizations by around 50%.

Singapore is the second country to acquire the experimental pill next to Australia, while several more Asian states are also looking to reach an agreement. Meanwhile, the drug is currently being reviewed by the United States Food and Drug Administration for its safety and efficacy.

The news comes as Singapore reports nearly 3,500 COVID-19 cases per day despite more than 80% of the country's population being fully vaccinated against the disease.
