United Kingdom Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced on Wednesday that his government has secured 480,000 courses of Merck & Co.'s Molnupiravir COVID drug, pending approval for use in the UK by health authorities. A deal was also signed for 250,000 courses of Pfizer's Ritonavir, an older drug used in HIV treatment that is still undergoing trials for effectiveness against COVID.

"I am delighted to confirm we may soon have a new defence in our arsenal with two new antiviral drugs that we have secured. Our work is far from done though - and we'll continue our tireless work to secure more innovative treatments so we can protect as many people as possible from the virus, its variants and future diseases," Javid said.

The drugs are expected to be made available to the most vulnerable populations as quickly as possible once approved by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
