Dow opens 800 pts lower on new strain fears

Major stock markets in the United States opened lower on Friday amid growing concerns about the new strain of COVID-19 found in South Africa, described as potentially more transmissible. Following the news, several nations restricted travel from the aforementioned country and the region. The event has led to a decrease in the prices of shares, oil, certain precious metals, and cryptocurrencies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 2.24% or 800 points at the opening as The Boeing Company plunged by 6.91%. The Nasdaq 100 lost 0.75% or 123 points, with Pinduoduo Inc. sinking by 12.09%. The S&P 500 declined by 1.58% or 74 points as Expedia Group Inc. plummeted by 10.79%.

The euro grew by 0.71% against the dollar to sell for $1.12874 at 9:28 am ET.
