Johnson and Johnson unveiled on Monday that it is evaluating the effectiveness of its coronavirus vaccine against the Omicron variant.

The pharmaceutical company noted that it is testing blood serum from participants in various booster studies to search for neutralizing activity against the newly discovered variant. Furthermore, J&J stated that they are looking to produce an Omicron-specific vaccine if needed.

The company's global head of research Mathai Mammen commented on the development: "We remain confident in the robust humoral and cell-mediated immune responses elicited by the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine demonstrated by the durability and breadth of protection against variants to date in clinical studies."
