South Africa will start its COVID-19 booster vaccination campaign on Friday after previously approving booster shots developed by Johnson & Johnson as well as Pfizer and BioNTech.

"From December 24, the National Vaccination Programme will provide J&J booster vaccinations to anyone who received their last dose at least two months prior," the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) noted in a statement, adding that Pfizer boosters will become available four days later.

The move comes as part of the government's plans to curb the spread of the highly infectious Omicron coronavirus variant, furthermore as the strain has spread from this country to the rest of the world.
