Airlines across the United States have canceled over 6,000 flights over the weekend due to staff shortages associated with the massive surge in COVID-19 infections that was brought by the new Omicron variant of virus.

United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue and American Airlines have jointly canceled nearly 700 flights for Sunday and delayed thousands, according to Politico. The data provided by flight tracker FlightAware showed that over 1,000 flights inbound, outbound or within the US have been called off as of Sunday, with more than another 4,000 delayed.

More cancellations are expected in the coming days.
