The Italian government confirmed on Sunday the country is set to receive about 40,000 doses of Merck's COVID-19 pills next week, that would be used to treat patients with a risk of developing severe disease symptoms.

Italy is also expected to get 200,000 doses of Pfizer's drug next month, COVID-19 commissioner Francesco Figliuol confirmed to local media.

The latest data showed Italy saw another 155,659 new infections and 157 coronavirus-related deaths within the last 24 hours, marking a significant decline compared to the previous week's records.
