United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed on Tuesday that people over 50 are now eligible for an additional booster dose of mRNA coronavirus vaccines four months after their previous dose.

The people "most likely to benefit from receiving an additional booster dose at this time" are persons "65 and older and those 50 and older with underlying medical conditions that increase their risk for severe disease from COVID-19," CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said in a statement, giving the final approval for the move that was supported by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, "adults who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID-19 vaccine at least 4 months ago may now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine," the CDC also announced.
