Russia expects US to create conditions for START talks

Tuesday, 29. November 2022 16:24

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday that Moscow expects the United States to make "conscientious efforts" to create conditions for the two countries to resume talks on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in 2023.

Zakharova claimed Russia decided to postpone the talks, which had been scheduled to start today, due to the "extremely negative" relations between Moscow and Washington created by the US. She stressed that Russia felt the US only wanted "adjust" the agreement in its favor as American officials "made it clear" they wanted to push for the resumption of inspections under the New START Treaty and didn't plan to address Russian concerns at all.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow will offer the US new dates for the restart of the talks but pointed out there is little chance that the discussions will resume before the end of the year.
