Jiang Zemin (pictured right), who served as Chinese president from 1993 to 2002, died earlier in the day in Shanghai at the age of 96, the Communist Party of China's (CPC) Central Committee announced on Wednesday.

Jiang became the CPC's General Secretary in 1989 following the protests in Tiananmen Square as a compromise in an effort to bridge tensions between those who advocated for a conservative approach and those who favored modernization.

During his tenure, China underwent a period of economic reforms that led to the strengthening of its international position, which included it becoming a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and winning the bid to organize the 2008 Summer Olympics. In that period, the country also saw the return of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1997 and Macau from Portugal in 1999.
