Southwest Airlines Co. canceled 2,602 flights, nearly two-thirds of the total scheduled, while the number of flights called off in the United States was 4,907, FlightAware data showed Tuesday at 4:04 pm ET.

According to the same site, delays totaled 15,463, while within, into, or out of the US, there were 4,725 delays. Southwest plans to extend the announced flight cuts until Thursday, a spokesman said commenting on the situation.

Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a source with knowledge of the matter, that senior executives had spent much of the weekend meeting to resolve the problems. The latest crisis in the airline industry is due to the impact of the recent blizzard that hit North America.
