United States President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping were scheduled to seal the phase one trade deal next week, but the negotiations over the final text of the agreement reached a dead end, CNN reported on Thursday.

Beijing and Washington couldn't agree on the size of Chinese agricultural purchases as well as the level of the tariffs for a potential no-deal scenario, according to the report.

Earlier on Thursday, White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said the two sides are "getting close" to reaching a deal as deputy-level conversations between the US and China are reportedly ongoing.
