Labor calls on Australian govt. to extend AZ supply

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) has urged Prime Minister Scott Morrison's (pictured right) government to extend its domestic manufacturing contract with AstraZenecac plc in order to continue supplying countries in the region.

ALP spokespeople drew attention to Papua New Guinea and Indonesia as being in particular need, with only 2% and 33% respectively of their populations vaccinated, as well as "a risk to Australia’s geopolitical interests by undermining our reputation for being a good neighbor by not extending sufficient support in our region’s time of need". The majority of vaccines procured by Indonesia so far have been Chinese Sinovac jabs.

The government currently plans to cease AstraZeneca production in Melbourne once the existing contract of 50 million doses is exhausted.
