Europe closes with gains as COP26 kicks off

Major European markets closed sharply higher on Monday as investors digested better-than-expected manufacturing data from the UK and focused on the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, where US President Joe Biden stressed the "urgent need to diversify" energy sources.

The FTSE 100 climbed 0.71%. The best performer was Bt Group whose shares rallied 4.39%.

The DAX rose 0.75% with Siemens Healthineers, up 2.68%, leading the gains.

The CAC 40 jumped 0.92% with BNP Paribas gaining 3.06%.

The euro added 0.25% against the dollar to sell for 1.15902 at 5:33 pm CET, while the pound dipped 0.07% compared to the US currency to go for 1.36796 at the same time.
