AZ vaccine can be 'rapidly' updated for Omicron - Oxford

Oxford University stated on Tuesday that the coronavirus vaccine developed jointly with AstraZeneca plc can be updated to cover the Omicron variant.

The university's spokesperson said that there is no evidence so far that Omicron is different when it comes to vaccines providing protection against severe cases. However, he was confident that the vaccine's creators have the "necessary tools and processes in place for rapid development of an updated COVID-19 vaccine if it should be necessary."

With the emergence of the new variant, pharmaceutical companies started warning the public that the original COVID vaccines may not be as effective against the Omicron strain as they are with others but admitted that more data is needed to collaborate such claims.
