Oxford, AstraZeneca working on Omicron jab

Tuesday, 21. December 2021 22:17

Oxford University and AstraZeneca have started preparing to work on a version of their COVID-19 vaccine that will protect from the Omicron variant, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

"Like with many previous variants of concern, and together with our partners AstraZeneca, we have taken preliminary steps in producing an updated vaccine in case it is needed," Sandy Douglas, a research group leader at Oxford, told the outlet. He stressed that adenovirus-based jabs, such as the Oxford/AstraZeneca one "could in principle be used to respond to any new variant more rapidly than some may previously have realized."

Following the emergence of Omicron, health officials around the globe warned there are signs that existing vaccines do not offer strong protection against the new variant.
