AstraZeneca plc announced on Thursday that antibody levels against the Omicron coronavirus variant after the administration of the booster dose of its coronavirus vaccine were up "significantly" compared to the response after the second dose.

In addition, neutralization titers against Omicron after the booster "were higher than the neutralizing antibodies found in individuals who had been previously infected with and recovered naturally from COVID-19 (Alpha, Beta, Delta variants and original strain)" and were "broadly similar to those observed one month after the second dose against the Delta variant," according to an independent study conducted by the University of Oxford that included 41 individuals.

"It is also important to look beyond antibodies to better understand how vaccines offer protection against Omicron. As we better understand Omicron, we believe we will find that T-cell response provides durable protection against severe disease and hospitalizations," AstraZeneca BioPharmaceuticals R&D Executive Vice President Mene Pangalos said in the company's press release.
