S. Korea to probe Google, Apple for payment issues

South Korea's Korea Communications Commission (KCC) announced on Tuesday that it will start an investigation into app stores owned by Google LLC, Apple Inc. and One Store. The companies are suspected of breaching the country's Telecommunications Business Act.

After an initial probe, the KCC concluded the app stores could be "enforcing certain in-app payment methods and refusing developers who use external payment methods to register and renew their apps on their markets," Yonhap reported. Google recently announced it will update its payment services in the European Union in accordance with new regulations, allowing developers of non-gaming apps to use an alternative to its billing system for digital content and services.
