Google to permit 3rd party app payments in some areas - report

Friday, 02. September 2022 11:04

Google LLC is planning to give permission for alternative in-app payment services in Japan, India, Australia and Indonesia, after the foreign regulators urged the company to open its payment systems in order to encourage competition, Nikkei learned on Friday.

According to Nikkei, Google is set to start a "pilot program" that will enable developers, who want to distribute their apps on the Google Play platform, to opt for using credit cards or other payment methods, instead of Google's payment system, which has so far been the only available option.

For the time being, only developers of non-gaming apps will be able to use the feature. Nevertheless, the company plans to expand this to others as well.
