Google Play formally introduced on Thursday the so-called user choice billing option that allows consumers to pay for subscriptions for other platforms directly via Alphabet Inc.'s store application.

The option was first introduced for Spotify Technology SA's eponymous application, as it was said when the idea was announced. Google also confirmed on its blog that online dating platform Bumble has also agreed to join the project. The option will first be available in the United States, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, India, Indonesia, Japan, and the European Union.

"Our goal is to understand complexities involved in supporting user choice billing for developers and users in countries across the world while maintaining a safe and positive user experience," Google's Product Management Vice President Paul Feng said in a written statement.
