FTC, seven US states sue Google over deceptive ads

United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and seven US state attorneys brought charges against Alphabet Inc.'s Google LLC and iHeartMedia Inc. on Monday for airing deceptive ads promoting Google's Pixel 4 smartphone.

The two companies are accused of broadcasting about 29,000 misleading endorsements of the phone by radio personalities in 2019 and 2020. The Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine stressed that paying influencers to promote products they never used points to a "blatant disrespect for truth-in-advertising rules," whereas Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey promised the process to bring accountability and future compliance with state and federal law.

The proceedings come after Google settled a privacy dispute involving location tracking with 40 US states for almost $400 million earlier in November.
