Europe opens flat on data, earnings

Major stock indexes started Wednesday's trading session mostly unchanged as investors focused on the latest batch of economic data and corporate earnings. Germany's Destatis said the country's gross domestic product grew more than expected in the fourth quarter of 2020. Meanwhile, Lloyds Banking Group plc reported an increase in Q4's net income.

The DAX and the FTSE 100 were unchanged at the open. Covestro AG was the best performer on the DAX, gaining 0.80% and helping the German index climb above the flatline. Meanwhile, the London-based stocks slipped into the red, with Intercontinental Hotels Group plc losing 1.22%. The CAC 40 fell 0.12% as Renault Groupe dropped 0.80%.

The euro was flat against the greenback at 8:59 am CET, changing hands for 1.21539. The pound rose 0.45% concurrently to sell for 1.41767 dollars.
