Top Chinese epidemiologist Li Lanjuan revealed on Sunday that the State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases that she leads is researching a booster vaccine that would specifically target the Delta coronavirus variant.

Speaking to Chinese media, she noted that the shot would be an inactivated vaccine and that her laboratory is joining forces with China's largest coronavirus vaccine research, development and production company "to go all out to promote the research and development of the Delta variant vaccine."

Authorities reported 75 new infections on the Chinese mainland on Sunday, up by 20 from the day before. The Delta variant has been identified as the main source of the COVID-19 outbreak in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, where 184 cases in total were discovered this week.
