Facebook has been developing its own in-house semiconductor that would power machine learning for company's tasks, such as content recommendation, The Information reported on Thursday citing two sources close to the matter.

The tech giant is also designing a chip for footage transcoding, a process aimed at improving the quality of recorded and live-streamed videos published across Facebook's apps.

The report suggested that Facebook is trying to go fully independent from other chipmakers, such as Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom, which could not only be cheaper but will also help reduce the carbon footprint of its enlarging data centers.
