China emphasized food and energy security as the main priorities to be considered in setting goals regarding curbing carbon emissions in a statement published on Sunday.

China's cabinet underlined the country's goals to reach its peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2060. However, the statement also reflected on China's recent energy shortages, citing "preventing overreaction" as necessary to mitigate economic risks of carbon reduction.

"China should manage the relationship between pollution reduction and carbon reduction and energy security, industrial supply chain security, food security and normal life of the people," said the statement.
