Europe opens higher after Omicron-prompted plunge

Shares on the major stocks market indexes in Europe traded higher as the session started on Wednesday, recovering some of the losses recorded the day prior.

While the new COVID-19 variant, dubbed Omicron, still dominated the headlines, some reassurances came in regard to the existing vaccines' effectiveness against the new strain, as well as Merck's coronavirus therapeutic.

The DAX advanced by 0.92% at 9:03 am CET as Siemens surged 1.85%. The CAC 40 jumped 0.79% at the open with Compagnie de Saint-Gobain up by 2.08%. At the same time, the FTSE 100 increased by 0.72%. Glencore was the London benchmark's top performer with a 2.79% climb a minute into the session.

The euro and the pound rose 0.16% compared to the dollar at 9:02 am CET, selling for 1.13582 and 1.33214, respectively.
