NY declares state of emergency over new COVID variant

New York Governor Kathy Hochul (pictured) declared a state of emergency as the state tries to get ahead of the spread of the newly discovered coronavirus Omnicron variant.

The newly issued state of emergency aims to increase the hospital capacity in the state, as data indicated that hospitalizations increased to over 300 per day over the past month. Moreover, Hochul said that the virus is spreading at a rate "not seen in the state since April 2020."

Hochul's state of emergency proclamation is before any cases of the Omnicron variant have actually been found in the state, but she insisted that it was only a matter of time. The state of emergency will be in effect until January 15, 2022.
