Coveney: EU simply cannot trust UK

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney remarked on Thursday the European Union "simply cannot trust" the United Kingdom after Britain decided to extend a grace period for some checks on goods going to Northern Ireland until October 1.

Coveney described London's move as "frustrating" and accused it of "essentially breaking the [Northern Ireland] Protocol [from the Brexit Withdrawal Agrement]." "This is not the first time this has happened," he stressed.

Coveney's comments come after the EU expressed its "strong concern" over what it described as a "unilateral" "violation of the relevant substantive provisions" of the Northern Ireland Protocol. The UK responded it was a "temporary technical step" and an "operational measure."
