The German government is considering obtaining a 25% stake in energy company Uniper SE at a nominal value of 1.70 per share or €150 million in total, according to a report published by Handelsblatt on Tuesday.

Berlin is looking into ways to save the gas giant that has plunged into a crisis due to soaring gas prices across Europe after Russia's invasion on Ukraine. Different approaches are being discussed, sources from financial circles were cited as saying, with an option of participation in the €5 billion capital without voting rights.

Uniper's shares declined over 6% to €10.6 apiece in Frankfurt near the end of Tuesday's trading session.
