Breton warns EU could ban Twitter if rules not followed - report

European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton once again warned Twitter's new owner Elon Musk that the social media platform could face a ban or fines of up to 6% of its global turnover in the European Union unless it abides by the bloc's content moderation rules under the Digital Services Act, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the sources, Breton held a video meeting with Musk in which he stressed Twitter must abandon an "arbitrary approach" to reinstating suspended accounts, address disinformation "aggressively" and agree to an "extensive independent audit" by next year. Meanwhile, Musk is said to have insisted he read the Digital Services Act and believes it should be applied all around the world.

Earlier, Musk vowed to reinstate all previously banned Twitter accounts except those that have "broken the law or engaged in egregious spam."
