The United States House of Representatives passed the bill that would avert the rail strikes on Wednesday. The legislation was passed with a 290-137 vote. The bill is now headed to the Senate for further approval.

The country's lawmakers are now expected to hold a vote on another separate act that would provide a paid sick leave of seven days, one of the main matters brought up by the rail workers' unions.

Previously, US President Joe Biden stressed that if the rail strikes took place, they "would devastate" the country's economy.
