Europe opens lower ahead of US inflation data

European equity markets opened lower on Wednesday ahead of the release of February's inflation data for the United States.

With no major economic releases on the European calendar, US inflation and the coronavirus pandemic were in focus. Markets have been nervous about an overheating economy as Congress moved to pass a $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. The large stimulus bill and rising Treasury yields have been triggering fears of soaring inflation in recent weeks across global markets.

The DAX was 0.05% below the flat line at the start of the session as Deutsche Post led the losses. The CAC 40 declined 0.18% in Paris with Alstom as the worst performer. The FTSE 100 was down 0.51% at the open; mining giant Rio Tinto fell over 2%.
