EC: Apple abused its dominant position in market

European Union antitrust authorities told Apple on Monday that they have formed a provisional view that the company has abused its dominant position in the mobile wallet markets.

The Commission said in its statement that it disagreed with Apple's decision to restrict mobile wallet app developers from obtaining access to the required hardware and software on its devices to the benefit of its solution, Apple Pay.

"We have indications that Apple restricted third-party access to key technology necessary to develop rival mobile wallet solutions on Apple's devices," said Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, while adding that "Apple may have restricted competition, to the benefit of its own solution Apple Pay. If confirmed, such a conduct would be illegal under our competition rules."
