Sony Group Corp. will provide its latest image sensor for the next generation of Apple Inc.'s iPhone series planned for 2023, Nikkei reported on Monday citing the company's executive.

According to the report, the state-of-the-art image sensor will help Sony cement its competitive edge in the high-definition photography sector, as its rival Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. gains ground, with sources claiming that "the landscape could change in one or two years."

The new sensor doubles the saturation signal level compared to its predecessors, allowing it to capture more light and adjust exposure in certain settings. Sony issued its second-quarter earnings report earlier this month, announcing a 16% annual increase in sales to arrive at $19.9 billion.
