Swedbank's chairman Lars Idermark resigned from his post on Friday amid a money laundering scandal that rocked the Swedish lender last week. His post will now be taken by deputy chair Ulrika Francke.

"It has been difficult, given the tense situation in media, to gain support for proportions and facts, and to correct direct errors," Idemark said, describing the latest developments as "regrettable."

Earlier, the bank's board of directors dismissed its president and chief executive officer Birgitte Bonnesen, following a raid of Swedbank's headquarters in Stockholm.
