THE EU-RUSSIA INDUSTRIALISTS' ROUND TABLE CALLS ON THE EU AND RUSSIA TO RAPIDLY START OFFICIAL NEGOTIATIONS ON A NEW FRAMEWORK AGREEMENT

Tuesday, 27. May 2008 10:47
Now that both the EU and Russia are in a position to commence
negotiations on a new EU-Russia framework agreement, the EU-Russia
Industrialists' Round Table (IRT) calls on the EU and Russia to
rapidly start official negotiations. Throughout the recent period,
the IRT has consistently urged a purposeful dialogue about the nature
of the future relations between the EU and Russia, involving all
stakeholders, including public administrations, civil society, and
business associations. Bringing together business representatives
from Russia and the EU, the IRT is well-placed to contribute to the
economic dimension of the debate.

Today, dialogue is more urgent than ever. Influenced by material
changes in the EU, Russia and the rest of the world since the
adoption of the present Partnership and Cooperation Agreement in
1997, we are now approaching a period of consolidation in our
relations. While the business community has been proceeding with
substantial investments, illustrating its confidence in the future
partnership, it has for long been looking forward to the start of
negotiations on a new agreement.

The IRT council members will next meet on 7 June 2008 in St.
Petersburg to discuss the future prospects for a new EU-Russia
framework agreement and will subsequently release their
recommendations for the principles that in their view should govern
future EU-Russia relations.

The EU-Russia Industrialists' Round Table (IRT) is an informal group
of EU and Russian industrial and business leaders committed to the
deepening of EU-Russia political and economic relations. Acting as a
consultative body for the EU and the Russian authorities, and
enjoying their full support, its establishment was endorsed by the
July 1997 EU-Russia Summit. The IRT co-chairmen are Mr Nils S.
Andersen, CEO of A.P. Moller - Maersk, and Mr Anatoly Chubais, CEO of
RAO UES of Russia.
